Rocket Jump is a first-person arena shooter game based on the quake controller. Rocket Jump features a variety of weapons, maps and game modes with the most notable mode of play being “Blitz” a mode where players use their weaponry to knock each other out of the arena to score points.

Conception

Built around the unique mechanic of Team Fortress 2’s well-known Rocket Jump, the game was heavily inspired by the same player controller with a twist on the typical arena shooter gameplay objective and a more fitting arsenal of weapons.

Development

Initially a solo project by a peer, Rocket Jump later became a two-person project when I was invited to work on it as a designer. I’ve conducted several playtests for the game and have worked on improving the design of the Blitz game mode through level design changes as well as weapon design changes. An example of one of my design changes being the “Blaster” weapon which has seen numerous balance iterations since its creation, including firing delays, power tweaks and knock-back modifiers. The Blaster has since been changed from the multiplayer playtest footage to have no firing delay however, it’s much weaker in most cases but it sees an increase in power when the user is stationary, and the target is airborne. The goal of the Blaster was to create a powerful weapon used for shooting enemies out of the sky and by changing the design of the weapon to have conditions that change the amount of knock-back the weapon deals, the Blaster is now in a state that we think fulfills its design goal very well.
